How to Read a Camera Specification Sheet

Five lines on a sheet are standardised and comparable; the rest is phrasing that needs checking.

Standardised lines are sensor resolution in megapixels, maximum shutter speed in seconds, continuous burst in frames per second, video frame rate and bit depth, and stabilization in CIPA stops.

Those are the figures an official specification sheet reports, and they can be compared directly between brands.

Conditions belong with the figure. The Alpha 9 III's 1/80,000 second is not available when shooting movies, when the Var. Shutter function is used, or when no lens is mounted.

Behavioural phrases such as blackout-free and distortion-free describe what the body does rather than a measured unit; check them against the numbered lines.

Rounding explains small gaps: the Alpha 7 IV is quoted as 33 MP in a review and 34.1 MP on Sony's technical data page for the same sensor.

Bit-depth lines need their unit as well: 14-bit RAW and 10-bit 4:2:2 measure different files. The figures themselves sit in the bodies comparison.

  • Resolution — megapixels
  • Shutter speed — seconds
  • Burst — frames per second
  • Video — frame rate and bit depth
  • Stabilization — CIPA stops
